Experiencing the Peace of God

God is PASSIONATE about breathing PEACE IN and THROUGH us! And while that sounds good, we all want peace, right! My day-to-day experience often lacks the peace of God. I get anxious about a lot of things. I worry about my kids, my family, and money. As I get older I worry more about my health. As a church planter and pastor I worry about the future of our church. With the chaos in our country and world I worry about the future!

Can you relate?

Thankfully God IS passionate about His people experiencing peace.  HERE is the audio from my message from yesterday on this subject.

Peace of God

God isn’t surprised by our anxiety today, and He has never been surprised by the anxiety we face. In fact here’s a story in Judges 6, way back in the OT, around 1000 B.C. that teaches us how to experience the peace of God!

God Wants to Breathe Peace IN and THROUGH You

I don’t know about you, but I desperately NEED peace and wholeness in my life! As a husband and father of four kids (12/10/8/1 yr olds), my life isn’t filled with circumstances characterized by peace (usually more like world war 3)! I live in a very expensive county and struggle to keep up with my bills. And there are plenty of things that cause me fear… the election, financial stress, threats of terror and on and on.

Thankfully God is not silent or absent! Last Sunday I preached, “God is Breathing Shalom IN and THROUGH Me.” I talked about the true source of PEACE and WHOLENESS and how to experience it. HERE is the audio.

God is breathing shalom peace and wholeness IN and THROUGH us

Pray: It’s the Fuel for Spiritual Warfare

When Christians put on the armor of God ALMOST nothing is impossible. With the armor on we are ABLE to live and experience the ABUNDANT LIFE that Jesus died and rose from the grave for us to experience. But the armor alone not enough!

Pray

I think most Christians, if they were honest, would confess that they are dissatisfied with their prayer life. They feel it is inadequate and perhaps infrequent. We pray but we don’t see answers. We don’t feel spiritual power. WHY? This was the topic of my last sermon in the book of Ephesians last Sunday. View part one is HERE. Part two is HERE.

Three Resources to Combat Spiritual Warfare

Everyone everywhere experiences spiritual warfare; it is not unique to Christians. But only Christians have what’s necessary to combat, to fight back, and win! Through Jesus we are able to combat and overcome. We do this by putting on the armor of God.

Combat Spiritual Warfare

Last week I wrote that I believe the armor is Jesus. My post on the first three pieces of this armor is HERE and describes Jesus as our truth, our righteousness, and our peace.

When we feel discouraged, upset, defeated, depressed, anxious, fearful, confused, uncertain — whatever the form of attack may be — we are to remind ourselves of these three truths.

Three Pieces of Armor You Already Have On

Our experience confirms that life is full of conflict, isn’t it! I usually think it’s conflict between people. Could be with my wife, our kids, our neighbors, our co-workers, or yes, even with people in our church!

Armor

According to the Apostle Paul and his letter to the Ephesian church our core conflict is not with people at all. The problem is much more serious. We are struggling against, “rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV)

The conflict can only be won with the right armor. Six pieces of spiritual armor make winning spiritual warfare possible. If you’re a Christian there are three pieces you already have on. If you aren’t yet a follower of Jesus consider these resources as strong consideration to follow Him.

4 Things to Remember About Spiritual Warfare

Life is full of struggles, isn’t it! It often feels like a wrestling match we just can’t win. But the Apostle Paul wrote to a church full of struggles 2000 years ago with answers. The answers given to the church at Ephesus are just as relevant today as they were then.

The bottom line is that the problems we face, the struggles we experience, are not primarily problems with humanity. They are what the Apostle Paul calls “rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” This was the topic of my sermon yesterday from Ephesians 6:10-13. You can find part one of the video HERE. Part two is HERE.

Warefare

Many reject a supernatural view of life. They refuse to believe in unseen powers. They reject any kind of spiritual kingdom, saying there is no God or devil. Maybe you know someone like this??!!

Others believe only in a kingdom of good. They believe in God and maybe angels, but refuse to accept the existence of the devil and/or hell.

I urge you to consider taking God at His word. The answers the Apostle Paul puts forth are the only explanations that come to grips with the problems and struggles of life.

How Prayer Helps to Root DOWN to Bear Fruit UP

This weekend I have the privilege of speaking at a church retreat. Tomorrow I’ll be giving a workshop titled, “Praying Roots DOWN to Bear Fruit UP.” Prayer is such a key to bearing fruit, especially in our witness in the world as Christians. By no means am I an expert, but I’ve been learning some things about prayer and witness that may be helpful for you too.

Prayer

God wants us to bear lots of fruit (as we’ll see from John 15).

There is a lot of fruit we could talk about bearing, but the fruit I want us to focus on here is the fruit of our witness as Christians in the world!

God wants us to love our neighbor as ourselves, right? for the most part that means people who do not go to church, who are not close to God, and who are different than us.

We might conclude that God wants to bear the fruit of influencing others who are far from Him, right???

7 Strengths God Provides

We all struggle to have the spiritual strength needed to face life. Maybe it’s temptations, habits, or even addictions. Many of us struggle with feelings of loneliness, frustration, uncertainty, sickness, boredom, and certainly weakness. This was the topic of my sermon yesterday from Ephesians 6:10. You can find part one of the video HERE.

7 Strengths God Provides

Sometimes Christians act like life is more of a playground than a battle ground! But as Warren Wiersbe has famously said…

In Ephesians 6:10 the Apostle Paul said it like this…

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”

How to Live a Spirit-filled Life

Ever struggle to live carefully? You want to do right, change a bad habit, or treat someone more loving, but you just can seem to be careful?! That can be a struggle for me. I addressed this in my sermon yesterday on Ephesians 5:15-21. You can find the video HERE.

Spirit-filled

At times I’m not careful with my words and actions…

How To Read the Bible and Change Your Life

Reading the Bible on a regular basis has been a habit of mine for 18 years. Through the years I’ve learned a few things that help me read the Bible with greater purpose. These principles can make reading the bible a life changing experience!

Read the Bible

Just Finished the New Testament in 46 Days

On Wednesday March 5 my wife, 10 year old son Elijah and I started the #LentChallenge. Many from my church also followed the plan. It was not easy to read through the entire New Testament in 46 days, but we did it!

Much thanks to Margaret Feinberg for creating the #LentChallenge. Through the challenge she shared great resources and today she wrote a great summary HERE.

Several Principles Can Change Our Lives as we Read the Bible

1. See the Bible as the Word of God

The Bible is not just a spiritual book. It’s not just information or history. It’s the Word of God.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matt 4:4)

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 11:28)

So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7)

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

The Bible is LIVING and ACTIVE! Therefore, as you read PRAY UP, IN, OUT as you read:

UP: ask God to speak to you as your read.

IN: ask God to help you understand what you’re reading as you read.

OUT: ask God to help you apply what you read.

2. Read the Bible for Application

The heart of the mission of the church is obeying the words of Jesus:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Jesus emphasized obeying throughout His preaching and teaching:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

James emphasizes the importance of hearing and doing:

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. (James 1:22-25)

3. Life Change is a team sport

In Ephesians 5 Paul teaches the need we have to grow and change in community (the church)

First,

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. (Ephesians 5:15-17)

Then he teaches us to be controlled by the Holy Spirit,

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:18-20)

Finally, he teaches us to do all this together, submitting to one another,

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:21)

We’re really submitting to God when we submit to each other.

Reading the Bible CAN Change Your Life!

1. Read the Bible it as the Word of God. Go into it expecting God to speak to you

2. When you read the Bible look for something to obey. If there is, ask God for the grace and strength to do it.

3. Read the Bible with a partner.

Commit to some kind of reading plan with someone if possible. I highly recommend @youversion. You can read a Proverb a day, topical devotion, partial bible plan, or for those with big ambitions you can the whole bible in a year.

If you don’t have a partner, share your commitment with someone who will ask you about it. Be intentional about sharing what you’re reading, learning, and how you’re applying the Bible to your life.
